BSGatlas
BSGatlas integrates and consolidates gene, transcript, operon, transcription start site (TSS), termination site (TTS), untranslated region (UTR), and non-coding RNA (ncRNA) annotations for the Bacillus subtilis genome by merging data from resources such as BsubCyc, Rfam, RefSeq, and SubtiWiki.
Key Features:
- Enhanced non-coding RNA annotation: Integrates multiple resources to achieve a twofold increase in ncRNA annotations, refines positional information for ~70% of ncRNAs, and enables inference of specific ncRNA types.
- Comprehensive transcript mapping: Combines TSS, TTS, and transcriptional unit (TU) information to identify 815 new TUs and 6,164 UTRs, representing a five-fold increase over existing resources.
- Operon annotation: Identifies 2,309 operons and provides transcriptional annotations covering 93% of genes in the Bacillus subtilis genome, an 11% improvement over previous efforts.
- Export formats: Provides annotations in GFF3 format compatible with omics and high-throughput analysis tools.
Scientific Applications:
- Large-scale genomic analyses: Supports genome-wide studies that require unified gene and transcript annotations for Bacillus subtilis.
- High-throughput studies: Supplies standardized GFF3 annotations suitable for omics workflows and computational pipelines.
- Gene regulation and RNA biology: Enables investigations of transcriptional organization, TSS/TTS mapping, operon structure, UTRs, and ncRNA-related regulation.
- Microbial physiology: Facilitates linking transcriptional architecture and ncRNA annotations to physiological and functional studies in Bacillus subtilis.
Methodology:
Collected existing gene and transcript annotations from multiple resources, resolved annotation discrepancies, and integrated them into a unified dataset to infer full transcripts and operons based on known transcript boundaries and meta-information.
