Clinical MetaData Ontology (CMDO)

Clinical MetaData Ontology (CMDO) provides an ontology and classification scheme for common data elements (CDEs) in clinical documents to support integration and management of clinical research metadata.

Key Features:

  • Ontology Development: Constructed using the General Formal Ontology method to provide a robust framework for comprehensive data integration.
  • Iterative Development Process: Built via a manual iterative process comprising five steps: defining scope by conceptualizing first-level terms based on clinical-practice procedures; identifying concepts representing general CDEs by examining clinical data generation processes; assigning hierarchical relationships among CMDO concepts; developing properties including synonyms, preferred terms, and definitions; and evaluating CMDO's utility in practical applications.
  • Comprehensive Conceptual Coverage: Contains 189 concepts organized under four primary classes—Description, Event, Finding, and Procedure—with 256 definitions and 459 synonyms covering 74% of the concepts.
  • Annotation Capability: Annotated CDEs extracted from six HL7 templates, clinical documents from five teaching hospitals, and one personal health record specification.

Scientific Applications:

  • CDE Integration: Integrates and classifies CDEs from diverse research projects and clinical documents to enable consolidated metadata management.
  • Interoperability Support: Provides a standardized classification that supports sharing and reuse of CDEs across studies, HL7 templates, and clinical environments.
  • Metadata-driven Analysis: Facilitates structured searching and analysis of clinical research metadata to support comparative and aggregated studies.

Methodology:

Development followed a manual, systematic iterative process analyzing clinical-practice procedures and the flow of clinical data generation to define scope, identify concepts, assign hierarchies, and develop concept properties.
