Cryfa
Cryfa encrypts and compresses genomic data in Fasta, Fastq, VCF, SAM, and BAM formats to provide confidentiality and storage reduction for genomic research.
Key Features:
- Encryption Capabilities: Employs Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and a shuffling mechanism to encrypt Fasta, Fastq, VCF, SAM, and BAM files and to reduce vulnerability to low-data-complexity attacks.
- Performance Efficiency: Provides encryption throughput reported as four times faster than AES Crypt and up to nine times faster than its closest competitor for Fasta files.
- Storage Optimization: Applies a compression approach tailored for genomic formats that can reduce Fasta and Fastq file sizes to approximately one-third of the original size while preserving data integrity.
- Resource Efficiency: Operates with a minimal memory footprint, requiring only a few megabytes of RAM.
Scientific Applications:
- Medical and Clinical Genomics: Secures sensitive patient genomic data to support applications such as personalized medicine while maintaining data confidentiality.
- Biological and Evolutionary Research: Reduces storage needs for large-scale sequencing datasets, facilitating analyses in evolutionary biology and population genomics.
- Data Management and Sharing: Enables confidential storage and more efficient sharing of genomic datasets among researchers and institutions.
Methodology:
Cryfa combines AES encryption with a shuffling mechanism that obfuscates data structure to protect against low-data-complexity attacks and uses a compression algorithm tailored for genomic formats (notably Fasta and Fastq) to reduce file sizes.
