Hayai-Annotation Plants

Hayai-Annotation Plants annotates plant gene sequences by performing ultra-fast USEARCH-based sequence-similarity searches against UniProtKB (taxonomy Embryophyta) and propagating Gene Ontology and Enzyme Commission annotations with prioritization of protein existence levels.

Key Features:

  • Ultra-Fast Annotation: Leverages a novel algorithm that prioritizes protein existence levels to rapidly propagate Gene Ontology (GO) and Enzyme Commission (EC) annotations and was reported to annotate Arabidopsis thaliana representative peptide sequences in approximately 5 minutes on a personal computer.
  • Comprehensive Annotation Layers: Provides five annotation layers: protein name; Gene Ontology terms across Biological Process, Molecular Function, and Cellular Component; Enzyme Commission number; protein existence level; and evidence type.
  • Sequence-Similarity Searches: Uses USEARCH for sequence-similarity searches against the UniProtKB database restricted to taxonomy Embryophyta.

Scientific Applications:

  • Large-scale Genome Annotation: Rapid annotation of large-scale plant genomic and transcriptomic datasets.
  • Functional Characterization: Functional characterization of genes in plant species through GO and EC assignment.
  • Comparative and Functional Studies: Generation of annotated representative sequences for comparative genomics and functional studies, including model organisms such as Arabidopsis thaliana.
  • Integrated Annotation Analysis: Integration of multi-layered annotation data (protein name, GO, EC, existence level, evidence type) to enhance biological interpretation.

Methodology:

Performs USEARCH sequence-similarity searches against UniProtKB limited to Embryophyta, followed by a functional annotation step that propagates GO and EC information using an algorithm that prioritizes protein existence levels and evidence type.
