QGIS

QGIS enables spatial analysis and environmental modelling by managing, processing, and integrating geospatial datasets to support studies of surface–groundwater interactions, time-series hydro-chemical data, and georeferenced historical imagery.

Key Features:

  • Integration with FREEWAT: Hosts the FREEWAT plugin as a pre- and post-processor for simulations of surface- and groundwater interactions, leveraging MODFLOW-OWHM for integrated hydrological modelling.
  • Time-Series Analysis and Processing: Provides the Observation Analysis Tool for time-series visualization, pre-processing for model development, post-processing of model results, support for calibration observations, and an expandable Python library for hydro-chemical data management and calibration.
  • Georeferencing of Historical Images: Includes a georeferencing plugin to link historical photographs lacking geospatial metadata to spatial coordinates for subsequent spatial analysis.

Scientific Applications:

  • Water Resource and Environmental Modelling: Simulating surface–groundwater interactions and incorporating anthropogenic water demands using FREEWAT and MODFLOW-OWHM.
  • Time-Series Hydro‑chemical Analysis and Calibration: Visualizing and pre-/post-processing time-series and hydro-chemical datasets to support model calibration and validation.
  • Cultural Heritage and Historical Image Analysis: Georeferencing and spatial analysis of historical image collections for research in cultural heritage and related scientific studies.

Methodology:

QGIS uses a modular, plugin-based architecture and leverages expandable Python libraries for tool development and integration.
