SPUTNIK

SPUTNIK filters spatially related peaks in mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) datasets as an R package, removing peaks with noisy or unlikely spatial distributions to produce a reduced, more informative peak set for downstream multivariate and statistical analyses.

Key Features:

  • Spatial peak filtering: Identifies and filters peaks whose spatial distributions in MSI data are noisy or implausible.
  • Noise reduction: Removes spatially inconsistent peaks to improve dataset quality and reliability.
  • Data simplification: Produces a smaller, more informative set of peaks to reduce dimensionality for downstream analyses.
  • Enhanced interpretability: Retains spatially coherent peaks to improve interpretability of multivariate and statistical results.

Scientific Applications:

  • Tissue section imaging: Refines MSI datasets from tissue sections to improve spatial mapping of biomolecules.
  • Cellular environment studies: Filters MSI data from cellular-scale experiments to highlight spatially relevant molecular signals.
  • Molecular spatial mapping and disease investigation: Supports accurate spatial distribution analysis of molecules for studying biochemical processes and disease mechanisms.

Methodology:

Analyzes spatial distributions of peaks within MSI datasets and identifies and filters peaks with noisy or unlikely spatial patterns to yield a reduced, informative peak set for downstream multivariate analysis.
