World Cancer Map
World Cancer Map visualizes global cancer statistics and integrates multi-source epidemiological datasets to support comparative and regional cancer analysis.
Key Features:
- Database-Driven Model: Database-driven architecture implements the Google Map Application Programming Interface (API) and asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX) to integrate and serve spatial cancer data.
- Extensive Data Sources: Aggregates mortality data from IARC (1950–2013), incidence data from IARC CI5plus, survival data from IARC SURVCAN, prevalence data from IHME (1990–2017), demographic data from the World Bank Data Catalog, and Taiwan-specific cancer data from the Department of Health and Welfare (1991–2016).
- Advanced Visualization Techniques: Employs seven visualization types—choropleth maps, tornado diagrams, treemaps, sunburst charts, line charts, bar charts, and heatmaps—to display prevalence, age-standardized and crude mortality, incidence, trends, and country comparisons.
- Global and Country-Level Insights: Provides both global and country-level views including crude and age-standardized mortality rates across administrative regions in 150 countries.
Scientific Applications:
- Comparative epidemiology: Enables comparative studies and trend analysis of cancer incidence, mortality, prevalence, and survival across countries and time periods.
- Pattern detection and visualization: Facilitates visualization-driven detection of geographic and demographic patterns in cancer statistics using multiple chart types.
- Public health and policy support: Supports epidemiological research, public health planning, and policy-making through integrated access to IARC, IHME, and World Bank datasets.
Methodology:
Integrates diverse cancer-related datasets in a database-driven architecture using the Google Map API and AJAX, and renders data using choropleth, tornado, treemap, sunburst, line, bar, and heatmap visualizations.
