Anaerobic Digestion Model No. 1 Fast (ADM1F)
ADM1F achieves fast and numerically stable simulations of anaerobic digestion processes by implementing the Portable Extensive Toolkit for Scientific Computation (PETSc) to solve the Anaerobic Digestion Model No. 1 (ADM1) system of equations.
Key Features:
- High-speed steady-state simulations: ADM1F consistently completes steady-state simulations under 0.2 seconds, over 99% faster than a benchmark ADM1 model implemented with MATLAB while achieving agreement of model outputs within 1% of those obtained with the benchmark model.
- Conditional dynamic simulation speed advantage: For dynamic simulations, ADM1F provides a computational speed advantage only when influent characteristics update more frequently than every 4 hours.
- Numerical stability: The implementation of PETSc enables more stable results compared to conventional methods for solving the ADM1 system of equations.
Scientific Applications:
- Two-phase co-digestion analysis: Evaluating the impact of organic loading rate and substrate composition on reactor performance and stability.
- Recovery strategy assessment: Assessing the effectiveness of recovery strategies after disruptions that led to instability in conventional digester scenarios.
- Complex anaerobic digestion system studies: Completing complex analyses within minutes through high simulation speed, enabling investigation of reactor performance and stability under varying operational conditions.
Methodology:
ADM1F implements the Portable Extensive Toolkit for Scientific Computation (PETSc), an advanced open-source library of numerical methods, to solve the ADM1 system of equations.
