ANASTASIA

ANASTASIA performs comprehensive metagenomic analysis of NGS-derived (meta)genomic sequence datasets to identify and annotate novel enzymes and peptides from environmental samples, with emphasis on thermal springs.

Key Features:

  • Comprehensive metagenomics: Performs analysis of NGS (next-generation sequencing) metagenomic datasets from environmental samples, particularly thermal springs.
  • Large-scale data handling: Provides a computational environment capable of handling large-scale bioinformatic analyses.
  • Automated workflows: Executes automated workflows for processing (meta)genomic sequence datasets.
  • Tool integration: Integrates publicly available tools and proprietary algorithms into those automated workflows.
  • Sequence translation and synthetic interpretation: Supports nucleotide and amino acid sequence translation and synthetic interpretation and analysis as implied by the platform name.
  • Annotation and interpretation: Enables fine annotation and interpretation of sequences to identify novel functional elements.
  • Extensibility: Functions as a stable and extensible environment for a wide range of metagenomic applications.

Scientific Applications:

  • Enzyme and peptide discovery: Mining environmental niches, including thermal springs, to discover novel enzymes and peptides with unique functional properties.
  • Biocatalyst identification for biotechnology and biomedicine: Supporting identification of biocatalysts and biomolecules relevant to industrial biotechnology and biomedicine within the ELIXIR-GR project framework.
  • Case example — EstDZ4: Enabled in silico identification of a novel thermostable esterase, EstDZ4, from a metagenomic sample collected in Krisuvik, Iceland.

Methodology:

Implements automated workflows that integrate publicly available tools and proprietary algorithms to process NGS (meta)genomic sequence datasets, perform nucleotide/amino-acid translation, and support sequence annotation and in silico identification.
