ARTS-DB

ARTS-DB provides a database of precomputed Antibiotic Resistant Target Seeker (ARTS) results to enable target-directed genome mining (TDGM) for prioritizing biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) that may encode novel antibiotics by detecting self-resistance signals such as proximity, duplication, and horizontal gene transfer of essential housekeeping genes across genomes and metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs).

Key Features:

  • Extensive Genome Coverage: Contains precomputed ARTS results for over 70,000 genomes and metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs).
  • Precomputed ARTS Outputs: Stores results generated by the Antibiotic Resistant Target Seeker (ARTS) for downstream analysis.
  • Advanced Search Functionalities: Supports analyses of BGC proximity to targets and detection of gene duplication and horizontal gene transfer (HGT) events relevant to TDGM.
  • Interconnected Data Across Species: Provides cross-species links of ARTS results to facilitate comparative genomic analyses of resistance and target conservation.
  • Integration with Natural Product Databases: Links ARTS-DB results to established natural product research databases to contextualize BGC prioritization.

Scientific Applications:

  • BGC Prioritization via TDGM: Prioritizes uncharacterized BGCs that may produce antibiotics by identifying self-resistance signatures in associated genomes.
  • Comparative Genomics: Enables comparative studies across bacterial species to investigate resistance mechanisms, target conservation, and evolutionary trends.
  • Natural Product Activity Prediction: Supports inference of potential biological activities of natural products encoded by uncharacterized BGCs through linkage of ARTS predictions and database references.

Methodology:

ARTS predicts proximity of essential housekeeping genes to BGCs, identifies gene duplications and horizontal gene transfer events, and uses these self-resistance signals within a target-directed genome mining (TDGM) framework; ARTS-DB stores the resulting precomputed outputs.
