bdvis

bdvis provides visualization functions to explore primary biodiversity records (PBRs) and assess inventory completeness, taxonomic, temporal, and geographic coverage while identifying gaps and biases in datasets such as those from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility.

Key Features:

  • Visualization Functions: Provides visualizations to preview inventory completeness and summarize taxonomic, temporal, and geographic coverage, highlighting gaps and biases in PBR datasets.
  • R-based Data Exploration: Implemented as an R package supplying functions for exploration and analysis of primary biodiversity records (PBRs).
  • Open-source Licensing: The source code is licensed under CC0.

Scientific Applications:

  • Data quality assessment: Assess completeness and suitability of primary biodiversity records (PBRs) before downstream modeling or analysis.
  • Bias and gap identification: Detect spatial, temporal, and taxonomic gaps and biases within PBR datasets.
  • Coverage characterization: Summarize spatial, temporal, and taxonomic coverage of PBRs from aggregators such as the Global Biodiversity Information Facility.

Methodology:

Implemented in R as a package of visualization and summarization functions that operate on primary biodiversity records (PBRs).
