BigBrainWarp

BigBrainWarp integrates BigBrain ultrahigh-resolution 3D histology with multimodal neuroimaging to map cytoarchitecture onto standard MRI templates for multi-scale brain analyses.

Key Features:

  • Spatial mapping: Maps data between BigBrain's cellular-resolution anatomy and conventional MRI spaces using deformation matrices.
  • Cytoarchitectural resources: Provides pre-configured cytoarchitectural features and maps derived from BigBrain histology.
  • Registration optimization: Implements optimization procedures for registration between BigBrain and standard neuroimaging templates to improve alignment accuracy.

Scientific Applications:

  • Characterization of cytoarchitecture: Enables detailed analysis of cellular composition and laminar structure across cortical and subcortical regions using BigBrain histology aligned to MRI.
  • Multi-scale investigations: Facilitates studies that integrate microscopic histological detail with macroscopic neuroimaging measures to probe structure–function relationships.
  • Neuroimaging template development and validation: Supports refinement and validation of standard neuroimaging atlases through accurate registration to BigBrain cytoarchitecture.

Methodology:

Application and encapsulation of multiple state-of-the-art deformation matrices to transform data between BigBrain and conventional MRI spaces, together with optimization procedures for registration between BigBrain and standard neuroimaging templates.
