BNS
BNS simulates Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) to evaluate radio-propagation, MAC behavior, mobility, thermal dynamics (via the Pennes bioheat transfer equation), and ISO/IEEE 11073-based device interoperability for e-health research.
Key Features:
- Advanced Wireless Channel Model: Incorporates a wireless channel model that accounts for real radio-propagation characteristics over the human body.
- Updated MAC Protocol Implementation: Implements a WBAN Media Access Control (MAC) protocol aligned with the IEEE 802.15.6 standard.
- Configurable Mobility Model: Provides a configurable mobility model tailored for intra-WBAN communication to simulate node movement patterns.
- Temperature Module: Models node temperature dynamics using the Pennes bioheat transfer equation based on node activity levels.
- Healthcare Application Layer: Implements a Healthcare Application Layer supporting data representation and communication between Personal Health Devices (PHD) in accordance with ISO/IEEE 11073.
Scientific Applications:
- WBAN communication and protocol evaluation: Evaluate MAC and communication protocol performance under realistic radio-propagation and mobility scenarios.
- Thermal and energy impact analysis: Analyze node temperature dynamics and associated energy-related behavior using the Pennes bioheat transfer equation.
- Healthcare device interoperability testing: Test data representation and communication between Personal Health Devices (PHDs) using an ISO/IEEE 11073-compliant application layer.
Methodology:
BNS extends the Castalia framework and implements a human-body radio-propagation wireless channel model, a MAC protocol aligned with IEEE 802.15.6, a configurable intra-WBAN mobility model, a temperature module using the Pennes bioheat transfer equation, and a Healthcare Application Layer implementing ISO/IEEE 11073; the framework is used to run simulations of three distinct WBAN use cases.
