CEDAR Workbench facilitates creation and management of structured, ontology-linked metadata to improve FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles and the reusability of biomedical research data.

Key Features:

• Metadata Modeling: Provides a principled schema framework for creating and managing metadata to ensure structure and standards compliance for data integration and interoperability.
• Ontology-Based Semantics: Integrates terms from established biomedical ontologies to standardize semantics and improve findability and reusability, including use of ontology terms for fields like condition and intervention.
• Structured Metadata Production: Produces structured metadata elements to replace free-text (e.g., ClinicalTrials.gov records), reducing ambiguity and enabling automated downstream analyses.

Scientific Applications:

• Clinical trial metadata curation: Enforces structured fields such as contact information, outcome measures, and study design to address missing or underspecified entries in trial records.
• Systematic reviews and meta-analyses: Improves data reusability and comparability by providing high-quality, standardized metadata for aggregation and secondary analysis.
• Patient–trial matching: Standardizes eligibility criteria and condition/intervention descriptors to facilitate automated patient–trial matching.
• Regulatory compliance: Supports completion of required metadata fields in accordance with government regulations for biomedical studies and trials.

Methodology:

Schema enforcement to ensure required metadata elements are present and formatted according to predefined schemas; ontology integration mandating ontology terms for critical fields like condition and intervention; and development of structured data elements for complex types such as eligibility criteria to replace semi-structured free text.
