ClustalW2 Phylogeny (EBI)

ClustalW2 Phylogeny (EBI) performs multiple sequence alignment and constructs phylogenetic trees to infer evolutionary relationships among biological sequences.

Key Features:

  • Multiple Sequence Alignment: Performs simultaneous alignment of multiple nucleotide or protein sequences for comparative analysis.
  • Phylogenetic Tree Generation: Constructs phylogenetic trees using neighbor-joining and UPGMA (Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean) methods to infer evolutionary relationships.
  • Implementation: The program has been rewritten and implemented in C++.
  • Cross-Platform Executables and Source Code: Provides executables for Windows, Linux, and Macintosh and makes source code available via the EMBL-EBI FTP site.
  • Integration with EMBL-EBI Resources: Interfaces with EMBL-EBI databases and analytical resources to support large-scale genomic analyses.
  • API Support: Exposes functionality via RESTful and SOAP-based APIs for programmatic integration into workflows.

Scientific Applications:

  • Comparative Genomics: Aligns sequences across species or strains to identify conserved regions and functional motifs.
  • Evolutionary Biology: Generates phylogenetic trees to trace evolutionary lineages and analyze genetic divergence.
  • Protein Structure Prediction: Produces sequence alignments used as input for homology modeling and related structure prediction methods.

Methodology:

Performs multiple sequence alignment and generates phylogenetic trees using neighbor-joining and UPGMA methods; implemented in C++.
