Covasim

Covasim simulates COVID-19 transmission and intervention impacts using a stochastic agent-based model to analyze epidemic trends and estimate resource needs.

Key Features:

  • Stochastic agent-based simulation: Performs stochastic simulations of individual agents and transmission events.
  • Demographic integration: Incorporates country-specific population size and age structure.
  • Multilayer transmission networks: Represents transmission within households, schools, workplaces, long-term care facilities, and communities.
  • Age-specific disease outcomes: Implements age-specific variations in disease progression and outcomes.
  • Intrahost viral dynamics: Models intrahost viral dynamics with viral-load-based transmissibility.
  • Intervention support: Represents non-pharmaceutical interventions (physical distancing, protective equipment), vaccination, symptomatic and asymptomatic testing, isolation, contact tracing, and quarantine.
  • Intervention complexity: Accounts for delays, loss-to-follow-up, and micro-targeting in intervention implementation.

Scientific Applications:

  • Epidemic projections: Projects COVID-19 infection trends and epidemic dynamics.
  • Intervention evaluation: Evaluates intervention scenarios and their impact on outcomes such as peak hospital demand.
  • Resource estimation: Estimates healthcare resource needs during different phases of the pandemic.
  • Policy support: Provides analyses used by local health agencies and policymakers to inform decision-making.

Methodology:

Implemented in pure Python, Covasim uses stochastic agent-based simulation integrating demographic data, multilayer contact networks, age-specific progression parameters, and intrahost viral dynamics with viral-load-based transmissibility.
