CropPol

CropPol provides a standardized global database of crop pollination measurements and insect visitation records to quantify pollination services and their effects on crop yield.

Key Features:

  • Extensive Data Collection: CropPol aggregates data from 202 crop studies comprising 3,394 field observations and 2,552 yield measurements, with parameters including berry mass, fruit number, and fruit density (kg/ha).
  • Insect Pollinator Records: The database contains 47,752 insect visit records across 48 commercial crops, with notable representation of Malus domestica (32 studies), Brassica napus (22 studies), Vaccinium corymbosum (13 studies), and Citrullus lanatus (12 studies).
  • Pollinator Guilds: CropPol reports pollinator guild abundances: honey bees 34.22%, bumblebees 19.19%, flies other than Syrphidae and Bombyliidae 13.18%, other wild bees 13.13%, beetles 10.97%, Syrphidae 4.87%, and Bombyliidae 0.05%.
  • Geographical Coverage: Studies originate from 34 countries, with counts by region: Europe (76 studies), North America (60), Latin America and the Caribbean (29), Asia (20), Oceania (10), and Africa (7).
  • Temporal Span: Sampling spans three decades with study counts by period: 2001–2005 (21), 2006–2010 (40), 2011–2015 (88), and 2016–2020 (50).
  • Crop Representation: The database includes data on 32 of the 87 leading global crops that are dependent on pollinators.

Scientific Applications:

  • Quantify pollination benefits to crop yield: Use the dataset to quantify variation in pollination benefits to crop yield across crops and regions.
  • Predict changes in pollination services: Support prediction of changes in pollination services under global change drivers.
  • Inform management and policy: Link pollinator visitation and guild composition to yield outcomes to inform management actions and policy.
  • Assess ecological and economic impacts: Enable studies of the ecological and economic impacts of pollinator activity on agriculture.

Methodology:

The database is constructed from standardized measurements recorded across diverse geographical locations and time periods, and it includes data on 32 out of the 87 leading global crops that are dependent on pollinators.
