DendroScan

DendroScan performs multivariate statistical and dendrogrammatic analyses of particle morphometry in volcanology, implemented in Matlab to support quantitative shape analysis for reconstructing eruption dynamics and tephra transport, dispersal, and emplacement.

Key Features:

  • Implementation: Implemented in Matlab.
  • Dimensionless shape parameters: Uses dimensionless shape parameters for morphometric comparison across datasets.
  • Multivariate statistical methods: Provides Levene's test, t-tests, equivalence tests and other multivariate statistical tests for rigorous comparison of morphometric datasets.
  • Dendrogrammatic analyses: Produces dendrograms that sort samples by morphometric dissimilarity and identify statistically equivalent samples.
  • Graphical outputs: Generates graphical representations of statistical and dendrogrammatic results for visual interpretation.

Scientific Applications:

  • Juvenile pyroclast analysis: Quantitative shape analysis of juvenile pyroclasts to infer eruptive mechanisms and cooling histories.
  • Eruption dynamics reconstruction: Comparative morphometry to support reconstruction of eruption dynamics.
  • Tephra transport, dispersal, and emplacement: Morphometric comparisons to investigate tephra transport, dispersal, and emplacement processes.
  • Comparative experimental validation: Comparison of experimental samples with volcanic ash, including analyses applied to the Havre 2012 deep-sea eruption (Kermadec arc, New Zealand).

Methodology:

Uses dimensionless shape parameters and multivariate statistical tests (Levene's test, t-tests, equivalence tests) and dendrogrammatic cluster analysis to compare morphometric datasets; implemented in Matlab.
