EBI Search

EBI Search provides high-performance text search and indexing across EMBL-EBI and selected external databases to retrieve and interconnect nucleotide and protein sequences, genes and gene products, protein domains and families, enzymes, macromolecular structures, chemical structures, molecular interactions, gene-expression experiments, reaction maps and pathway models, functional classifications, biological ontologies, and life-science literature.

Key Features:

  • Interconnectivity and Data Navigation: Leverages links among EMBL-EBI resources to navigate related records across nucleotide and protein sequences, genes, gene products, protein domains, protein families, enzymes, macromolecular structures, and literature.
  • RESTful API Integration: Exposes a RESTful "Search as a Service" API for programmatic querying and retrieval of indexed records.
  • SOAP Web Services Interface: Provides a SOAP Web Services interface for programmatic access to search and retrieval functions.
  • Comprehensive Data Coverage: Indexes over 62 distinct datasets comprising more than 400 million entries including genomic and proteomic sequences, chemical structures, molecular interactions, gene-expression experiments, reaction maps, pathway models, functional classifications, biological ontologies, and biomedical literature.

Scientific Applications:

  • Sequence Analysis: Enables comprehensive searches across nucleotide and protein sequences for genomic and proteomic investigations.
  • Structural Biology: Facilitates access to macromolecular structures and associated chemical and molecular complex information.
  • Gene Expression and Interaction Studies: Supports discovery of gene-expression experiments and binary molecular interactions to explore biological processes and pathways.
  • Literature Exploration: Provides indexed life-science literature for integrating experimental data with published findings.

Methodology:

Implements a high-performance text search and indexing system and exposes programmatic access via RESTful API and SOAP Web Services.
