ENA sequence search

ENA sequence search performs sequence-similarity searches against the European Nucleotide Archive (including the Sequence Read Archive, Trace Archive, and EMBL-Bank) to retrieve nucleotide sequences and associated records for genomic, transcriptomic, and metagenomic analyses.

Key Features:

  • Sequence Similarity Search: Performs sequence-similarity searches to identify sequences related to a query for gene identification, evolutionary and functional genomics studies.
  • Comprehensive Database Access: Queries the ENA databases including the Sequence Read Archive (SRA), Trace Archive, and EMBL-Bank to retrieve archived nucleotide sequences and metadata.
  • Enhanced Search Functionality: Extends ENA Browser search capabilities to support more robust sequence retrieval and exploration.
  • Data Submission Support: Integrates with ENA services for data submission, archiving, and downloading of sequence records.
  • Interoperability with EGA: Supports submission of data to the European Genome-phenome Archive (EGA) via SRA-based mechanisms.

Scientific Applications:

  • Genomic Research: Identifies homologous genes across species to support studies of gene function and evolution.
  • Transcriptomics and Proteomics: Retrieves transcriptome and protein-related sequence data from SRA for RNA-seq and protein analysis workflows.
  • Metagenomics: Compares environmental sample sequences to reference entries in ENA to support microbial community and biodiversity analyses.

Methodology:

Uses sequence alignment and similarity-detection algorithms to search and retrieve matching records from ENA databases.
