EyeDose

EyeDose estimates radiation doses delivered to tumors and critical ocular structures in patients treated with 125I Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study (COMS) eye plaques by integrating published Monte Carlo simulation results to provide standardized dosimetric assessments.

Key Features:

  • Monte Carlo simulation integration: Integrates three-dimensional dose distributions derived from published Monte Carlo methods and accounts for plaque orientation relative to ocular anatomy guided by tumor positioning on fundus diagrams.
  • Standardized dosimetric models: Employs a standardized ocular-structure model constructed from published anatomical measurements and patient CT scans to ensure consistency in dose calculations.
  • Dosimetric metrics: Calculates point dose and volume dose metrics for the fovea, optic disc, lens, lacrimal gland, retina, and tumor, and reports dosimetric margins to account for implant placement uncertainties.
  • Validation: Validated against previously published Monte Carlo results across various tumor positions.
  • Implementation: Implemented as a MATLAB-based application that leverages published Monte Carlo simulation results for dose assessment.
  • Efficiency and data handling: Processes datasets with an average computation time of less than 40 seconds per patient and accepts spreadsheet inputs for retrospective analyses.

Scientific Applications:

  • Standardized dose reporting: Provides consistent dosimetric reporting for uveal melanoma patients undergoing plaque radiotherapy with 125I COMS eye plaques.
  • Dose–outcome analysis: Enables evaluation of relationships between radiation exposure to ocular structures and visual outcomes.
  • Study facilitation: Supports large-scale retrospective analyses and prospective assessments of plaque applicability and dosimetric impact.

Methodology:

Integrates published three-dimensional Monte Carlo dose distributions; orients plaque relative to ocular anatomy using tumor position on fundus diagrams; applies a standardized ocular model based on published anatomical measurements and patient CT scans; computes point and volume dose metrics and dosimetric margins; implemented in MATLAB and validated against published Monte Carlo results.
