FlowUTI

FlowUTI establishes optimal cut-off values for bacterial and leukocyte counts in urine by analyzing flow cytometry data to support urinary tract infection (UTI) screening.

Key Features:

  • Cut-off optimization: Establishes optimal cut-off values for bacterial and leukocyte counts in urine samples.
  • Flow cytometry input: Uses flow cytometry measurements as the basis for UTI screening analyses.
  • Statistical analysis: Performs robust statistical analyses to determine diagnostic thresholds for UTI markers.
  • Neonate/infant dataset: Includes 204 urine samples from neonates and infants (≤3 months old) presenting with suspected UTIs in an emergency department.
  • Elderly dataset: Includes 1,174 urine samples from an elderly population attended at primary care facilities.
  • Implementation: Implemented in the R programming language and executable via the R console.
  • Source code: Source code is available on GitHub.

Scientific Applications:

  • UTI marker thresholding: Determine optimal thresholds for bacterial and leukocyte counts to classify urine samples in UTI screening.
  • Population-specific cut-offs: Derive and compare cut-off values specific to neonates/infants (≤3 months) and elderly primary care cohorts.
  • Standardization of interpretation: Reduce variability in flow-cytometry result interpretation across studies by providing empirically derived cut-offs.
  • Clinical screening support: Inform diagnostic decisions for suspected UTIs in emergency department and primary care settings.

Methodology:

Implemented in R; uses two empirical datasets (204 neonatal/infant urine samples from an emergency department and 1,174 elderly primary care urine samples) and performs statistical analyses to establish optimal cut-off values for bacterial and leukocyte counts; executable via the R console and with source code on GitHub.
