G-RooT

G-RooT integrates standardized, curated root trait data to support large-scale comparative studies and global ecological modeling.

Key Features:

  • Expert-Driven Trait Selection: Core root traits were identified through expert assessment to capture traits essential for describing plant form and function.
  • Extensive Data Coverage: The database contains 114,222 trait records covering 38 continuous root traits across arid, continental, polar, temperate, and tropical biomes.
  • Standardization and Quality Control: Rigorous standardization protocols and data quality checks were applied to maximize species coverage and ensure comparability within and among traits.
  • Temporal and Taxonomic Depth: Records span 1911–2019 and cover 184 sub-species or varieties, 6,214 species, 1,967 genera, and 254 families.

Scientific Applications:

  • Ecological modeling: Integration of root trait data into ecological and global models to improve representation of plant belowground function.
  • Comparative trait analyses: Large-scale comparative studies of the global spectrum of plant form and function using standardized root traits.
  • Environmental response studies: Investigation of plant responses to environmental change and the role of root traits in ecosystem processes.
  • Biodiversity and climate-change research: Informing analyses of root ecology with implications for biodiversity patterns and climate-change impacts.

Methodology:

Trait identification by expert assessment; data standardization using established protocols across sources; and rigorous quality-assurance checks on the compiled dataset.
