GELBANK

GELBANK organizes two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE) proteome patterns from organisms with fully sequenced genomes to support comparative proteomics and protein identification.

Key Features:

  • Extensive Proteome Coverage: Contains 131 completed proteomes, predominantly microbial, including Homo sapiens, Methanococcus jannaschii, Pyrococcus furiosus, Shewanella oneidensis, Escherichia coli, and Deinococcus radiodurans, sourced from the National Center for Biotechnology Information.
  • Advanced Query Capabilities: Supports queries by protein attributes and specific 2DE-pattern characteristics to enable targeted retrieval of gel patterns.
  • Dynamic Visualization: Provides dynamic display of molecular weight and pH profile information, visualization of linked protein identifications, and creation of animations from selected images or sub-regions.
  • Integration with Protein Identifications: Links 233 reported protein identifications across 81 gel patterns to visualized gel spots for direct association of spots and protein identities.
  • Organizational Structure: Images and metadata are organized by species, tissue type, separation method, sample type, and staining method.

Scientific Applications:

  • Comparative Proteomics: Enables cross-species comparative analyses using 2DE pattern differences across completed genomes.
  • Protein Identification and Quantification: Facilitates linking gel spots to protein identities for identification and relative quantification analyses.
  • Methodological Development: Provides a repository of separation methods and staining techniques for refining 2DE experimental approaches.
  • Educational Resource: Serves as a dataset for training and instruction in proteomics and gel electrophoresis techniques.

Methodology:

Data are stored and organized by species, tissue type, separation method, sample type, and staining method, with query capability by protein attributes or 2DE-pattern characteristics and linkage of gel spots to protein identifications.
