HNOXPred

HNOXPred predicts gas-sensing heme-nitric oxide/oxygen (H-NOX) proteins from amino acid sequences to identify conserved heme centers involved in nitric oxide and oxygen sensing.

Key Features:

  • Automated Prediction: Automates identification of H-NOX centers using experimental data and previously reported candidate sequences.
  • Motif-Based Approach: Identifies conserved amino acids at H-NOX heme centers via a motif-based approach critical for gas-sensing functionality.
  • HNOXSCORES Calculation: Computes a score ranging from 0 to 1 that integrates physicochemical properties of heme-center amino acids and conserved residues.
  • Demonstrated Utility: Applied to the human proteome to illustrate large-scale detection of candidate H-NOX proteins.

Scientific Applications:

  • H-NOX Identification and Annotation: Predicts and annotates putative gas-sensing H-NOX proteins across bacteria and eukaryotes based on sequence motifs and scoring.
  • Proteome-Scale Screening: Enables large-scale screening of proteomes, demonstrated by analysis of the human proteome to locate candidate H-NOX centers.

Methodology:

Motif-based identification of conserved heme-center residues combined with a scoring algorithm that incorporates physicochemical properties to compute HNOXSCORES (0 to 1).
