IBWS: IST Bioinformatics Web Services

IBWS: IST Bioinformatics Web Services provides programmatic access to biological resources and enables interoperability among molecular databases and mutation resources for bioinformatics research.

Key Features:

  • Access to Biological Resources: IBWS provides programmatic access to over 130,000 biological resources, including strains of micro-organisms and human and animal cell lines, from 29 collections across European Biological Resource Centers.
  • Interoperability with Molecular Databases: IBWS implements a Sequence Retrieval System (SRS) for the TP53 Mutation Database maintained by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon to enable querying and data exchange with other molecular biology databases.
  • Information Retrieval System (SWS): The "SRS by WS (SWS)" component retrieves information from public SRS sites and facilitates direct queries to those SRS instances.
  • Web Services Suite (APIs): IBWS exposes functionality as web services with Web Services Description Language (WSDL) definitions and APIs to enable integration into external bioinformatics applications.

Scientific Applications:

  • Genomic Research: Facilitating access to extensive genomic resources and mutation databases such as the TP53 Mutation Database for mutation and variant studies.
  • Bioinformatics Integration: Enabling integration of disparate biological datasets into cohesive analyses via web services, SRS, and SWS.
  • Data Interoperability: Enhancing interoperability between molecular biology databases across European Biological Resource Centers to support cross-database queries and data consolidation.

Methodology:

IBWS exposes web services and APIs with WSDL definitions, implements a Sequence Retrieval System (SRS) and "SRS by WS (SWS)" to retrieve and query public SRS sites, and provides a standardized programmatic interface for accessing biological resources.
