iMMC

iMMC models photon propagation and light transport in complex biological tissues using an implicit mesh-based Monte Carlo approach to provide accurate and efficient simulation of light–tissue interactions in structures such as dense microvascular networks, porous media, and multi-scale tissue architectures.

Key Features:

  • Implicit mesh-based Monte Carlo algorithm: An evolution of mesh-based Monte Carlo (MMC) that simulates photon propagation through highly complex tissue geometries.
  • Dual mesh- and shape-based representations: Integrates mesh- and shape-based tissue representations to represent intricate geometries and reduce memory requirements.
  • Memory efficiency: Reduces memory usage by more than a hundredfold and in some cases by more than a thousandfold compared to traditional methods.
  • Computational speed: Achieves nearly threefold speed improvements over previous models on sample microvascular network simulations.
  • Precision for dense structures: Provides precise solutions for dense vessel networks and porous tissues.
  • Integration with MMC platform: The iMMC algorithm is integrated into an MMC software platform.

Scientific Applications:

  • Reference solutions for light transport modeling: Provides accurate reference solutions for validating and developing biophotonics techniques that model light transport in tissues.
  • Simulation of multi-scale tissue structures: Enables exploration of photon transport in dense microvascular networks, porous media, and multi-scale tissue architectures.
  • Reduction of computational barriers: Facilitates analysis of complex tissue environments by lowering run-time and memory constraints of Monte Carlo simulations.

Methodology:

Implements an implicit mesh-based Monte Carlo approach that integrates mesh- and shape-based representations to simulate photon propagation, as an evolution of the mesh-based Monte Carlo (MMC) technique.
