MEGAN6

MEGAN6 performs integrated taxonomic and functional analysis of metagenomic, metatranscriptomic, metaproteomic, and rRNA sequence data to characterize microbial community composition and functional potential.

Key Features:

  • Taxonomic Analysis: Performs taxonomic classification using the NCBI taxonomy to identify and categorize microbial taxa.
  • Functional Analysis: Annotates functions using SEED classification and KEGG pathways to assign subsystems, pathways, and enzyme classifications.
  • Data Integration: Integrates metagenomic, metatranscriptomic, metaproteomic, and rRNA sequence data for combined taxonomic and functional analyses.
  • Comparative Analysis: Allows import and comparison of classification results obtained from other tools.
  • Visualization Tools: Produces visualizations including bar charts, word clouds, and coronoi tree maps.
  • Statistical Analysis: Supports statistical analyses such as Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCoA), clustering, and network analysis.

Scientific Applications:

  • Environmental microbiology: Elucidating microbial diversity, functional potential, and ecological roles in environmental samples.
  • Ecological and biotechnological research: Supporting studies ranging from basic ecological research to applied biotechnology.

Methodology:

Classification uses the NCBI taxonomy and functional annotation uses SEED and KEGG; the system integrates metagenomic, metatranscriptomic, metaproteomic, and rRNA sequences and applies statistical methods including PCoA, clustering, and network analysis, and can import and compare external classification results.
