Metaxa2

Metaxa2 detects and classifies ribosomal RNA genes (SSU: 12S/16S/18S and LSU: 23S/28S) in metagenomic and environmental sequencing datasets to assign taxonomic origin across archaea, bacteria, eukaryotes, mitochondria, and chloroplasts.

Key Features:

  • Expanded Gene Support: Supports detection and classification of both SSU (12S/16S/18S) and LSU (23S/28S) rRNA genes.
  • Enhanced Classification Accuracy: Employs an improved classifier enabling taxonomic assignments down to genus or species level.
  • Short-Read and Paired-End Compatibility: Processes short-read (100 bp) sequences and paired-end reads from sequencing technologies.
  • Performance Superiority: Demonstrates higher correct prediction rates and low misclassification rates in comparative evaluations against other taxonomic classifiers.
  • Partial rRNA Extraction: Extracts partial rRNA sequences from large sequencing datasets for downstream classification.
  • Broad Taxonomic Coverage: Classifies sequences into archaeal, bacterial, nuclear eukaryotic, mitochondrial, and chloroplast origins.
  • Robustness to Metagenomic Complexity: Designed to handle complexities of metagenomic data during taxonomic assignment.

Scientific Applications:

  • Microbial Community Analysis: Enables taxonomic profiling of microbial communities from metagenomic datasets.
  • Ecological Studies: Supports identification of taxonomic composition in environmental sequencing for ecological research.
  • Biodiversity Assessments: Facilitates biodiversity assessments by classifying rRNA sequences across domains and organelles.
  • Evolutionary Investigations: Aids studies of evolutionary relationships among microorganisms through fine-resolution rRNA classification.

Methodology:

Metaxa2 extracts partial rRNA sequences from large sequencing datasets and applies its classification algorithms to assign sequences to archaeal, bacterial, nuclear eukaryotic, mitochondrial, or chloroplast origins, including processing short-read (100 bp) and paired-end data.
