miRTissue

miRTissue provides tissue-specific analysis of human microRNA (miRNA)–target interactions by integrating validated miRNA–target interactions with miRNA, gene, and protein expression profiles across human tissues.

Key Features:

  • Tissue-Specific Interaction Analysis: Integrates validated miRNA–target interactions with miRNA, gene, and protein expression profiles across 15 different human tissues to characterize where interactions are likely to occur.
  • Validated Interaction Source: Uses experimentally validated interactions from the miRTarBase database.
  • Expression Data Source: Incorporates miRNA, gene, and protein expression profiles derived from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) repository.
  • Statistical Correlation and Significance: Calculates statistical correlations among miRNA, mRNA, and protein expression profiles per tissue and reports p-values for tissue-specific interaction significance.
  • Interaction Type Identification: Leverages protein expression data to distinguish interactions leading to mRNA degradation from those causing translation inhibition.
  • Comparative Tissue and Cancer Analyses: Provides analytical views for comparing interactions across different cancer types and tissue conditions.

Scientific Applications:

  • Cancer Research: Enables comparison of miRNA–target interactions across cancer types and tissues to support identification of potential biomarkers or therapeutic targets.
  • Gene Regulation Studies: Facilitates analysis of how miRNAs regulate gene expression in specific tissues to inform studies of development and disease mechanisms.
  • Personalized Medicine: Supplies tissue-specific interaction data that can inform development of targeted therapeutic strategies based on individual expression profiles.

Methodology:

Integrates validated interactions from miRTarBase with miRNA, mRNA, and protein expression profiles from TCGA, computes statistical correlations among these expression datasets per tissue, assigns p-values for interaction significance, and uses protein expression patterns to infer interaction type (mRNA degradation versus translation inhibition).
