MicroSNiPer

MicroSNiPer predicts the impact of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on microRNA (≈22-nucleotide noncoding RNA) binding sites within 3' untranslated regions (3'-UTRs) of mRNAs to assess potential regulatory effects on gene expression relevant to complex diseases.

Key Features:

  • Prediction of SNP impact: Predicts whether SNPs disrupt, eliminate, or create putative microRNA binding sites within target 3'-UTRs.
  • 3'-UTR analysis: Analyzes 3'-UTR regions of genes to identify disruptions or enhancements in microRNA binding caused by genetic variation.
  • Binding site disruption and creation detection: Determines if a SNP within a target site disrupts or abolishes an existing microRNA site or generates a new site.
  • Real-time computation: Computes effects of genetic variations on microRNA interactions in real time.
  • Flexible analysis capabilities: Provides flexible analysis parameters for assessing SNP effects on microRNA–mRNA interactions.

Scientific Applications:

  • Complex disease research: Enables investigation of how SNP-altered microRNA binding may contribute to complex disease mechanisms.
  • Regulatory variant identification: Identifies regulatory changes induced by SNPs that may influence gene expression.
  • Gene expression impact assessment: Assesses potential effects of SNP-mediated microRNA binding changes on mRNA repression and disease pathogenesis.
  • Therapeutic target discovery: Assists identification of novel therapeutic targets by implicating SNPs that alter microRNA regulation.

Methodology:

Analyzes 3'-UTR sequences to detect SNP-induced disruptions or enhancements of microRNA binding sites and computes the effects of genetic variations on microRNA interactions in real time, determining whether SNPs disrupt, eliminate, or create binding sites.
