MitoCarta
MitoCarta (MitoCarta3.0) provides a curated inventory of mammalian mitochondrial proteins, annotating sub-mitochondrial localization and hierarchical MitoPathway assignments for human and mouse genomes and reporting 1136 human genes with strong evidence for mitochondrial localization.
Key Features:
- Dual Genomic Control: Acknowledges dual genomic control of the mitochondrial proteome with approximately 99% of proteins encoded by nuclear DNA and 13 proteins encoded by mitochondrial DNA.
- Sub-Mitochondrial Localization Annotations: Provides detailed localization annotations categorizing proteins into matrix, inner membrane, intermembrane space, and outer membrane.
- MitoPathway Annotations: Classifies proteins into 149 pathways distributed across seven broad functional categories using the hierarchical MitoPathways system.
- Data Integration and Validation: Inventory was developed through Bayesian integration of multiple sequence features and experimental datasets, including protein mass spectrometry from mitochondria isolated from fourteen murine tissues.
- Inventory Updates: Reflects curated changes from the previous release, with 100 genes removed and 78 genes added.
Scientific Applications:
- Functional Genomics: Provides localization and pathway annotations to aid functional characterization of genes within mitochondrial biology.
- Disease Research: Enables investigation of mitochondrial dysfunctions associated with disease to inform studies of pathogenesis and potential therapeutic targets.
- Systems Biology: Supports integrative analyses combining proteomic data with other omics layers to study cellular metabolism and energy production.
Methodology:
Bayesian integration of multiple sequence features and experimental datasets, including protein mass spectrometry from mitochondria isolated from fourteen murine tissues.
