MitoZoa

MitoZoa curates complete and nearly complete metazoan mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences and improved annotations to support comparative mitochondrial genomics and downstream analyses.

Key Features:

  • Curated Data: Complete or nearly complete mitochondrial genomes from metazoans are curated as quality-controlled entries.
  • Enhanced Annotations: Corrections and improvements to mtDNA annotations provide detailed information on gene order, non-coding regions, and other genomic features.
  • Search Capabilities: Retrieval of specific data such as gene order, sequence details including size and location of non-coding regions, and comparative mtDNA features across congeneric species, with explicit consideration of saturation phenomena in nucleotide substitutions and gene order changes.
  • Mitochondrial Feature Exploration: Exploration of molecule topology, genetic code, gene content, and compositional parameters of entire mitochondrial genomes.
  • Data Formats and Export: Entry lists, sequences, and gene order data are provided in tabular formats, FASTA, and FASTA-like formats for downstream computational processing.

Scientific Applications:

  • Comparative Genomics: Comparative studies of mitochondrial genomes within taxa and among congeneric species using curated sequences and annotations.
  • Phylogenetic Analysis: Phylogenetic inference using gene order and sequence data while accounting for saturation effects in nucleotide substitutions and gene order changes.
  • Regulatory Element Analysis: Investigation of non-coding regions for regulatory signals relevant to mtDNA replication and transcription.
  • Genome Architecture and Composition Studies: Analyses of molecule topology, genetic code, gene content, and compositional parameters to assess evolutionary relationships and genetic diversity.

Methodology:

MitoZoa is implemented as a relational database that integrates curated mitochondrial genomic sequences and annotations with advanced search functionality and provides exports in tabular, FASTA, and FASTA-like formats.
