MIxS-SA
MIxS-SA defines standardized metadata terms and hierarchical sample-nesting conventions to document symbiont-associated microbiota and host–symbiont–microbe interactions for comparative sequence-based and ecological analyses.
Key Features:
- Nestedness Representation: Captures nested relationships among hosts, symbionts, and associated microbiota to reflect ecological and evolutionary context.
- Metadata Collection: Specifies metadata fields for symbiont life history traits, associations with one or multiple host organisms, and interaction types across the mutualism–parasitism continuum.
- Sample Localization and Nesting: Provides terms for co-localizing samples and nesting MIxS packages within each other to represent hierarchical sampling designs and replicates.
- Standardization and Reporting: Introduces MIxS-SA terms to standardize reporting of symbiont-associated sequence data across environments and studies.
Scientific Applications:
- Microbiome research: Enables standardized description of symbiont-associated microbiota for comparative microbiome analyses.
- Parasitology: Supports metadata capture for parasite-associated microbial communities and host–parasite–microbe interaction studies.
- Symbiosis ecology: Facilitates studies of mutualistic and parasitic symbioses by providing nested and interaction-type metadata.
- Comparative sequence-based studies: Permits cross-study comparisons of sequence data across hosts, symbionts, and environments through standardized metadata.
Methodology:
Defines standardized metadata fields that capture information on symbiont-associated microorganisms, host organisms, interaction types, and environmental contexts, and enables co-localization and nesting of samples and MIxS packages.
