MotAn

MotAn detects structural motifs containing β-strands within 3D protein structures to classify and analyze arrangements of β-strands and α-helices and to inform studies of protein topology and function.

Key Features:

  • Comprehensive Motif Detection: Identifies structural motifs including β-hairpins, β-meanders, β-helices, Greek keys, interlocks, jellyrolls, β-α-β-motifs, and β-α-β-helices.
  • Algorithmic Precision: Uses algorithmic techniques to detect motifs within 3D protein structures and reports higher sensitivity in motif identification compared to PTGL and PROMOTIF.
  • Protein Classification by Topology: Classifies proteins into all-β or α/β classes based on detected motif arrangements along the polypeptide chain.
  • Validation on SCOP Families: Validated by testing on selected SCOP families, demonstrating increased sensitivity relative to other programs.

Scientific Applications:

  • Functional Inference: Provides insights into the functional implications of specific structural arrangements in proteins.
  • Structural Architecture Analysis: Enhances understanding of protein architecture by identifying topology-defining motif arrangements of β-strands and α-helices.
  • Support for Structural Biology and Modeling: Supplies motif-level annotations useful for research in structural biology, bioinformatics, and molecular modeling.
  • Large-scale Structural Studies: Automates motif detection to facilitate large-scale analyses of protein structure-function relationships.

Methodology:

Uses algorithmic detection of motifs in 3D protein structures, benchmarked against PTGL and PROMOTIF and validated on selected SCOP families.
