MRIES

MRIES maps cortico-cortical evoked potential (CCEP) datasets derived from single pulse electrical stimulation (SPES) to estimate and visualize inter-regional direct brain connectivity for analysis of normal and pathological networks.

Key Features:

  • Matlab implementation: Implemented as a Matlab toolbox for automated processing and visualization of CCEP datasets derived from SPES.
  • Automated processing pipeline: Integrated pipeline for CCEP datasets that includes methods to remove stimulation artifacts from low- and high-frequency signals.
  • Connectivity calculation methods: Incorporates multiple methodologies for calculating brain connectivity from CCEP signals.
  • Visualization options: Generates connectivity matrices, circle maps, surface maps, and volume maps for comparison of connectivity measurements.
  • Validation on patient data: Validated using sample CCEP data from eight epilepsy patients, demonstrating bidirectional connectivity between the medial temporal lobe (MTL) and the insular cortex.

Scientific Applications:

  • Mapping inter-regional direct connectivity: Derives direct connectivity maps between cortical regions using CCEP responses to SPES.
  • Investigation of normal and abnormal networks: Facilitates analysis of both normative and pathological brain network organization from evoked responses.
  • Epilepsy presurgical planning: Supports pre-surgical planning in epilepsy treatment by identifying effective connections relevant to surgical targets.
  • Brain mapping research: Enables generation and comparison of effective neural network visualizations for neuroscience studies.

Methodology:

Automated processing pipeline for CCEP datasets derived from SPES including stimulation-artifact removal from low- and high-frequency signals, calculation of connectivity using incorporated methodologies, and generation of connectivity matrices, circle maps, surface maps, and volume maps.
