MzS Tools

MzS Tools provides GIS-based data management and mapping for seismic microzonation to standardize geoscientific datasets and support seismic risk assessment in Italian municipalities.

Key Features:

  • Geodatabase Integration: Employs SQLite/SpatiaLite RDBMS to store geognostic surveys, bedrock and cover terrains, geomorphological elements (superficial and buried), tectonic-structural features, and zones of geological instability including landslides, liquefaction-prone areas, and active fault lines.
  • Data Entry and Management: Implements data entry forms created with Qt Designer and supports categorization of microzones including assignment of seismic amplification factors.
  • Mapping and Visualization: Provides a QGIS project template with layers, symbol libraries, graphic styles, and predefined layouts for producing seismic microzonation (SM) maps.
  • Standardization: Enforces a standardized geographic database schema and map styling to ensure homogeneity and uniformity of SM data across municipalities.

Scientific Applications:

  • Seismic Microzonation Studies: Supports compilation, storage, and mapping of geognostic, geomorphological, and seismotectonic data for SM investigations.
  • Seismic Risk Assessment and Mitigation: Enables integration of instability zones and seismic amplification factors into spatial analyses used for risk evaluation and mitigation planning.
  • Land-use Planning and Infrastructure Development: Provides standardized SM maps and datasets to inform land-use decisions and infrastructure design in seismically active areas.
  • Emergency Preparedness and Policy Planning: Supplies spatial datasets required for emergency preparedness and policy-making related to earthquake risk management.

Methodology:

Systematic collection and integration of geognostic, geomorphological, and tectonic data into a unified QGIS environment using SQLite/SpatiaLite RDBMS, Qt Designer–built data entry forms, and QGIS project templates with defined layers, symbol libraries, graphic styles, and predefined layouts.
