Neuroscience Information Framework

Neuroscience Information Framework provides ontology-based discovery and integrated access to heterogeneous web-based neuroscience data, datasets, materials, and tools for neuroscience research.

Key Features:

  • Comprehensive Resource Inventory: Maintains an inventory of web-based neuroscience resources, including datasets, materials, and tools.
  • Ontology-Based Search System: Employs the NIFSTD ontology together with the OntoQuest module to enable ontology-driven searches across heterogeneous sources.
  • Concept-Based Query Support: Interprets keywords as concepts to retrieve synonyms and related terms rather than relying on exact string matching.
  • Multi-Modal Data Integration: Supports searching across web pages, publications, relational databases, XML documents, and full-text publications.
  • Collaborative Development: Developed collaboratively with the Society for Neuroscience's Neuroinformatics Committee and contributors, extending terminologies such as those from the Human Brain Project.

Scientific Applications:

  • Literature review and resource discovery: Facilitates comprehensive literature reviews and discovery of relevant datasets and tools using ontology-based queries.
  • Data mining and meta-analysis: Enables data mining and meta-analyses by retrieving conceptually relevant records across heterogeneous sources.
  • Basic and large-scale neuroscience studies: Supports basic neuroscience research and complex studies that require integration of large-scale heterogeneous data.

Methodology:

The system is structured around the NIFSTD ontology and uses the OntoQuest module to perform ontology-driven searches and concept-based query expansion across relational databases, websites, XML documents, and full-text publications.
