notab

notab converts tab characters in ASCII text files to a specified number of space characters within the EMBOSS suite to standardize formatting for molecular biology data processing.

Key Features:

  • Text formatting: Replaces tab characters with a specified number of ASCII space characters in input files to standardize text representation.
  • Customization: Accepts a parameter to specify the number of spaces that replace each tab character.
  • EMBOSS integration: Functions as part of the EMBOSS suite and can be incorporated into workflows alongside over 200 EMBOSS applications and third-party bioinformatics programs.

Scientific Applications:

  • Sequence and dataset preparation: Standardizes sequence data files and other tab-delimited ASCII datasets to prevent misinterpretation in downstream bioinformatics analyses.
  • Workflow compatibility: Ensures text-based inputs are compatible with tools within EMBOSS and other molecular biology software to maintain data integrity during processing.

Methodology:

Replaces tab characters in ASCII text files with a configurable number of space characters and provides a parameter to set the number of spaces per tab.
