ONIX
ONIX integrates multimodal neural recording and perturbation during naturalistic behavior through a unified open-source data acquisition system with high data throughput and low closed-loop latency.
Key Features:
- High-throughput data acquisition: ONIX achieves data throughput of 2 GB s-1 with closed-loop latencies below 1 ms.
- Minimal behavioral impact tethering: A 0.3-mm thin tether minimizes behavioral impact during freely moving recordings.
- Active commutation: Three-dimensional head position and rotation tracking drives active commutation without torque measurements.
- Multimodal device compatibility: ONIX acquires data from passive electrodes, Neuropixels probes, head-mounted microscopes, cameras, three-dimensional trackers, and other data sources.
- Long-duration recording capability: The system enables uninterrupted recordings of approximately 7 hours during complex three-dimensional terrain traversal and multiday sleep-tracking recordings of approximately 55 hours.
Scientific Applications:
- Freely behaving neural recording: ONIX enables long-duration recordings from large neural populations during unimpeded animal behavior in freely moving conditions.
- Three-dimensional behavioral neuroscience: The system supports exploration with similar mobility as nonimplanted animals during complex three-dimensional terrain traversal.
- Multiday sleep tracking: ONIX enables continuous multiday neural recordings during sleep states.
- Closed-loop perturbation: The low-latency architecture supports closed-loop neural perturbation experiments.
Methodology:
ONIX uses a 0.3-mm thin tether for data transmission, implements three-dimensional head position and rotation tracking to drive active commutation without torque measurements, and integrates multiple data streams through a unified acquisition architecture.
