Orcid API

Orcid API provides persistent, unique researcher identifiers and an interoperable registry that links researchers to publications, clinical trials, patents, datasets, and other research activities for accurate attribution and metadata integration.

Key Features:

  • Unique Digital Identifier: Each researcher is assigned an ORCID iD that persists over the researcher's career and disambiguates authorship across platforms.
  • Cross-Disciplinary Integration: The registry links with existing identifier schemes and records research activities across disciplines, including publications, clinical trials, patents, and datasets.
  • Automated Linkages: ORCID iDs can be embedded in manuscript submission workflows, citation metadata, and repository deposits to automate connections between researchers and outputs.
  • Data Management and Dissemination: ORCID enables linking multiple datasets to researcher records to support dissemination, tracking, and attribution of research outputs.
  • Integration with Existing Systems: ORCID supports integration with services such as CrossRef to store and display ORCID iDs within publication metadata.

Scientific Applications:

  • Author Attribution: Ensures accurate attribution of publications, patents, clinical trials, and datasets to individual researchers.
  • Metadata Enrichment: Embeds ORCID iDs into publication metadata to enhance discoverability and linking across CrossRef and repositories.
  • Dataset Linking: Connects researchers to datasets across repositories to improve traceability and reuse of data.
  • Workflow Automation: Facilitates automation of manuscript and grant submission workflows and repository deposition using machine-readable identifiers.
  • Research Evaluation and Tracking: Enables aggregation of researcher outputs for impact assessment and tracking across disciplines.

Methodology:

Creates a centralized registry that assigns ORCID iDs and integrates those identifiers into publication metadata and other platforms via embedded identifiers and interoperability with systems such as CrossRef.
