OTSun

OTSun performs Monte Carlo forward ray tracing to simulate light–matter interactions in solar-thermal collectors and photovoltaic cells for accurate optical performance prediction using full-form Fresnel equations.

Key Features:

  • Advanced Light-Matter Interaction Modeling: Employs the Fresnel equations in their most comprehensive form to characterize reflection and transmission without oversimplification.
  • Monte Carlo Forward Ray Tracing: Uses Monte Carlo forward ray tracing to simulate photon paths and optical interactions within devices.
  • Support for Arbitrary Geometries (FreeCAD): Integrates FreeCAD parametric 3D modeling to construct and analyze complex geometrical configurations.
  • Dynamic and Spectral Modeling: Accounts for dynamic conditions such as moving components and variable wavelengths during optical simulations.
  • Numerical Validation: Demonstrated numerical experiments reporting deviations below 0.25% against reference models and exact formulas.

Scientific Applications:

  • Performance Prediction: Simulates real-world conditions to predict optical energy gains of solar-thermal collectors and photovoltaic cells.
  • Design Validation and Optimization: Enables detailed analysis of optical efficiency for refining solar device designs.
  • Linear Fresnel Reflector Analysis: Validated simulations with moving objects showing deviations of less than 0.25% from reference models.
  • Second Surface Mirror Evaluation: Tests with variable wavelengths showing deviations of less than 0.25% compared to exact formulas or other computational programs.

Methodology:

Computational methodology uses Monte Carlo Forward Ray Tracing combined with full-form Fresnel equation applications, modeling complex geometries via FreeCAD and dynamic conditions such as moving components and variable wavelengths.
