PPDB assesses pesticide exposure risk to human health and the environment by computing the Potential Pesticide Exposure Index (PPEI) that integrates population proximity, pesticide toxicological properties, and application frequency.

  • Comprehensive Risk Assessment: The PPEI integrates human population proximity to agricultural crops, toxicological properties of pesticides, and application frequency to estimate exposure risk.
  • Geospatial Analysis: The index is applied to defined regions (for example, a 7200 km² area in southern Ecuador cultivated with corn, rice, and sugarcane) to identify hotspots and spatial variation in vulnerability to pesticide residues.
  • Scalability and Flexibility: The PPEI can incorporate additional parameters such as other crop types or variations in pesticide application frequency.
