PROSITE Scan (EBI)

PROSITE Scan (EBI) scans protein sequences for PROSITE patterns and profiles to detect signature matches that support protein function prediction and annotation of functional and structural residues.

Key Features:

  • Signature detection: Scans user-provided protein sequences and sequences from the UniProt Knowledgebase (UniProtKB) against PROSITE patterns and profiles to identify signature matches for function prediction.
  • ProRules-based contextual annotation: Applies ProRules context-dependent annotation templates to identify and annotate functional and structural intra-domain residues.
  • Pre-computed UniProtKB matches: Retrieves matches for UniProtKB sequences from a pre-computed match database to enable efficient data retrieval.

Scientific Applications:

  • Functional annotation: Predicts protein functions by identifying PROSITE signature matches and mapping them to known functional motifs.
  • Structural biology: Identifies intra-domain residues and conserved sites to inform structural and interaction studies.
  • Proteome-scale analysis: Enables large-scale annotation of protein sequences using pre-computed UniProtKB matches and PROSITE profiles.

Methodology:

Protein sequences are scanned against a database of PROSITE patterns and profiles; ProRules are applied to contextualize signature matches within specific domains; matches for UniProtKB sequences are retrieved from a pre-computed match database.
