Protein Naming Utility

Protein Naming Utility generates syntactically correct and unambiguous protein names and applies naming rules to correct synonyms and syntactical errors to support accurate functional annotation and preparation of GenBank submissions.

Key Features:

• Rule Management: Stores and implements naming rules as a repository and application platform, including 3,080 manually entered rules and 7,458 automatically imported names.
• Customization for Diverse Conventions: Groups naming rules into configurable collections to reflect different community standards and project-specific conventions.
• Correction and Validation: Checks protein names against selected rule collections and outputs statistical analyses and corrected name variants, including replacement of synonyms with preferred names.
• Integration with GenBank: Processes entire GenBank table files to apply nomenclature corrections prior to submission to public databases such as GenBank.

PNU combines manual curation by JCVI analysts and automated imports (3,080 manually entered rules and 7,458 automatically imported names) with systematic identification of common syntactical errors to develop corrective naming rules based on established conventions and expert input.
