pySICE

pysice: Sentinel-3 OLCI Snow and Ice Property Retrieval Pipeline

pysice processes Sentinel-3 Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) data to retrieve snow and ice properties using algorithms developed by Kokhanovsky et al. (2018–2020) within the Pre-operational Sentinel-3 Snow and Ice (SICE) Products framework.

Key Features:

  • Data Processing Pipeline: Automates conversion of SICE-generated GeoTIFF files to ASCII format for downstream analytical processing.
  • Algorithmic Implementation: Applies Kokhanovsky et al. (2018–2020) radiative transfer–based algorithms to derive quantitative snow and ice properties from OLCI measurements.
  • Fortran Integration: Interfaces with the Fortran program sice.f, compiles and executes it, and converts text outputs into refined GeoTIFF products.

Scientific Applications:

  • Snow and Ice Monitoring: Quantifies snow cover and ice dynamics from Sentinel-3 OLCI data for environmental and cryospheric studies, including climate change assessments in polar and glacial regions.

Methodology:

Acquires Sentinel-3 OLCI imagery, converts SICE GeoTIFF inputs to ASCII format, applies Kokhanovsky et al. (2018–2020) algorithms via integration with the Fortran program sice.f, and post-processes outputs into GeoTIFF files for quantitative analysis of snow and ice properties.
