PZLAST

PZLAST performs ultra-fast amino acid sequence similarity searches against large public metagenomic datasets to identify homologs, support function prediction, and summarize the environmental distribution of similar sequences.

Key Features:

  • Speed and Efficiency: Searches are executed in approximately 10–20 minutes using the PEZY-SC2 many-core processor, enabling analysis of datasets that exceed several terabytes.
  • High Accuracy: The method maintains high precision in identifying similar amino acid sequences within public metagenomic data.
  • Ontology-Based Summarization: Results are organized with an ontology-based approach to summarize the environmental distribution of matched sequences.
  • Function Prediction and Homolog Mining: Identified sequence similarities are used to predict functions of unknown sequences and to mine homologs of functionally important genes.

Scientific Applications:

  • Genomics: Comparative analysis of protein sequences to infer gene function and identify homologs across genomic datasets.
  • Metagenomics: Large-scale similarity searches across public metagenomic datasets to explore sequence diversity in environmental samples.
  • Functional Biology: Prediction of molecular function for unknown amino acid sequences based on similarity to characterized proteins.
  • Microbial Ecology: Assessment of the environmental distribution of similar sequences to inform ecological and habitat associations.
  • Evolutionary Biology and Biotechnology: Discovery of homologous sequences for evolutionary analyses and identification of candidate genes for biotechnological applications.

Methodology:

Sequence similarity searches are performed on a PEZY-SC2 many-core processor against extensive public metagenomic datasets, enabling rapid comparisons across datasets exceeding several terabytes.
