QVT

Quantitative Velocity Tool (QVT): Automated Post-processing for Cranial 4D Flow MRI

Quantitative Velocity Tool (QVT) performs automated post-processing of cranial 4D flow MRI using threshold-based segmentation to replace centerline processing schemes (CPS) with k-means clustering, enabling accurate vessel delineation and hemodynamic quantification.

Key Features:

  • Threshold-based Segmentation: Delineates vessel lumen areas with higher accuracy than CPS; validated against ground-truth computed tomography data in vitro and in vivo using linear regression analysis.
  • Automated Hemodynamic Quantification: Computes flow rates and hemodynamic parameters from segmented vessels with minimal manual intervention.
  • Flow Rate Validation: Demonstrates strong correlation between MRI-derived flow rates and perivascular ultrasound measurements.
  • Internal Consistency Analysis: Assesses conservation of flow at vessel junctions and evaluates normalized flow distributions along vessel segments using Gaussian fitting.
  • Comparative Performance Evaluation: Benchmarked against CPS in flow phantom (in vitro) and healthy participant (in vivo) datasets using paired t-tests (p < 0.001).
  • Interobserver Reproducibility: Provides high interobserver agreement for vessel segmentation and flow quantification.

Scientific Applications:

  • Neuroimaging and Cerebrovascular Research: Quantifies cranial hemodynamics for studies of cerebrovascular physiology, disease diagnosis, and treatment planning using 4D flow MRI.

Methodology:

QVT applies threshold-based segmentation to cranial 4D flow MRI datasets for vessel extraction, followed by automated computation of hemodynamic metrics. Segmentation accuracy is validated against computed tomography ground truth and perivascular ultrasound flow measurements. Statistical evaluation includes linear regression, paired t-tests, conservation of flow analysis at vessel junctions, and Gaussian fitting of normalized flow distributions.
