RareLink
RareLink implements an ontology-based rare disease common data model that enables standardized data exchange between REDCap, international registries, and downstream analysis tools through semi-automatic import and export to GA4GH Phenopackets and HL7 FHIR R4 instances.
Key Features:
- REDCap Integration: Preconfigured pipelines interact with the local REDCap application programming interface for data import and export.
- Phenopackets Export: Enables semi-automatic export of data to GA4GH Phenopackets format.
- FHIR R4 Export: Enables semi-automatic export of data to HL7 FHIR R4 instances conforming to the HL7 International Patient Summary and Genomics Reporting profiles.
- Ontology-Based Common Data Model: Implements a previously-published ontology-based rare disease common data model for standardized data exchange.
- Semi-Automatic Data Import: Supports semi-automatic import of data from Phenopackets and FHIR instances into REDCap.
Scientific Applications:
- Rare Disease Registry Interoperability: Links international rare disease registries to global health data standards for secondary data use.
- Metabolic Disorder Research: Deployed across German university hospitals for registry and data analysis in patients with rare metabolic disorders.
- Neuromuscular Disorder Research: Supports data collection and analysis for patients with rare neuromuscular disorders.
- Inborn Errors of Immunity Research: Integrated with the Canadian Inborn Errors of Immunity National Registry and validated using clinical data from these patients.
- Kabuki Syndrome Cohort Simulation: Demonstrated data export capabilities using a simulated Kabuki syndrome cohort based on published cases.
- Structured Data Analysis: Enhances clinical utility of REDCap by enabling structured data analysis for rare disease research.
Methodology:
The framework was developed and validated in three iterative phases using retrospective and prospective clinical data from patients with various rare metabolic and neuromuscular disorders, as well as inborn errors of immunity.
