Rigbox

Rigbox provides modular experimental control, hardware interfacing, stimuli presentation, and datastream synchronization for behavioral neuroscience experiments.

Key Features:

  • Modular architecture: Object-oriented, modular design that enables composition and extension of experiment components.
  • Hardware/software interfacing: Interfaces hardware inputs and outputs for data acquisition and real-time experimental control.
  • Datastream synchronization: Time-aligns datastreams from multiple sources such as video, audio, and physiological signals.
  • Remote database communication: Supports communication with remote databases for experimental data management and storage.
  • Stimuli presentation (Signals): Implements visual and auditory stimuli presentation and provides the Signals submodule for programming behavioral tasks.
  • Performance optimization: Uses Java components for network communication and a C library for performance-critical operations.

Scientific Applications:

  • Behavioral neuroscience experiments: Experimental control and data acquisition for a wide range of animal and human behavioral studies.
  • Human psychophysics: Implementation of psychophysical paradigms for human perceptual experiments.
  • Interactive behavioral paradigms: Supports interactive tasks and game-like experiments (e.g., the game of Pong) for behavioral testing.
  • Multisensory tasks: Design and execution of tasks engaging multiple sensory modalities via visual and auditory stimuli.

Methodology:

Rigbox employs an object-oriented modular architecture; the Signals submodule programs tasks; it time-aligns multiple datastreams; Java components handle network communication and a C library implements performance-critical functions.
